Avoiding Extra Charges On Overseas Transactions

One of the cheapest – and most easily controlled – ways to access foreign currency is with a prepaid currency card. These are loaded with cash before you go and there is no credit or overdraft facility, so it’s easier to budget.

Foreign exchange companies such as FairFX, Travelex and CaxtonFX provide the cards, as do the AA, Virgin Money, the Co-operative Bank and the Post Office. There are also specialist providers such as My Travel Cash and Escape Travel Money.

Although you can get more specialist currency cards, the majority are in either euros, US dollars or pounds sterling – designed to be used anywhere.

The cards have a MasterCard symbol on them and are accepted anywhere that credit cards are, either by swiping – normally fee free – or by withdrawing money from a hole in the wall for a much smaller charge than on a normal credit or debit card.
